WORKBOOK AND CENTRE ACTIVITIES FOR DEVELOPING NUMBER SENSE FOR NUMBERS 1-20

Using the the math workbooks and centre activities found within these units cover the curriculum outcomes below:

 

  1.  I can count forward starting at any number
  2. I can write numbers 0-20 and show the correct amount of objects for these numbers
  3. I know a number represents an amount of objects
  4. When I count, I know each number I say represents one object
  5. I know the last number I say is the number I say is the number of objects, even if I arrange them differently
  6. I know when I count the number gets bigger
  7. I can count 20 things
  8. I can tell if a group has greater than, less than or an equal amount
  9. I can compare two printed numerals between 1-10
  10. I can decompose numbers by how many tens and ones there are

Mouse Paint, Go Away Big Green Monster Literacy

The “Sight Words Alphabet Program” was revised last summer.  All learning outcomes are based on related literature selections.  In this mini-unit the literature selections “Mouse Paint, Go Away Big Green Monster and The Nose Book” are used to successfully introduce key learning outcomes that are outlined below.

Shared Reading Follow-Up

The companion emergent reader “Monster Parade” would be used as a follow-up to model the reading process and to introduce the following:

 

Alphabet Letters:  Mm and Nn

 

Sight Words:  blue, red, yellow and come

 

All Pre-primer sight words are introduced within the program.  They are introduced in meaningful context followed-up with interactive games.  In this reader and color words and identifying shapes are the key focus.

Writing and Simple Follow-Up Crafts

In this craft activity the students would mix paint colors to make a new color using the mouse template below.  This activity would also coincide with your Science outcomes.  The students would use the mouse template displayed below that is provided within.  As a follow-up writing activity the students would draw a monster and describe it as displayed in the photograph below using the template provided.  This activity is a follow-up to reading the book “Go Away, Big Green Monster”.

Pete the Cat Scuba Cat Literacy

This mini-theme is based on the literacy selection “Pete the Cat Scuba Cat” written by James Dean.  Other similar selections written by this author could also be used for instructional purposes.  This unit is included in the Alphabet Program, which covers the majority of the Pre-Kindergarten outcomes.  All the alphabet letters and Pre-primer Dolch sight words are introduced within this program.

All alphabet letters/sounds and sight words begin with using popular literature selections for modeled reading or reading workshop.  In this set of lesson plans, the teacher would use “Pete the Cat Scuba Cat” and other similar literature selections written by this author.

 

Shared Reading Follow-Up

The companion emergent reader “Exploring the Ocean with Ollie Octopus” would be used a follow-up to reading the literature selection.  The color version of the reader would be projected for all the students to view.  The teacher would model the reading process teaching early reading skills, the focus alphabet letters and sight words.

This mini-theme is based on the literacy selection “Good Night Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann. This lesson plan is part of a nine-week Good Night Gorilla Literacyprogram (or longer) to meet the majority of the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten curriculum outcomes.  A balanced literacy approach is used within the Kinderplans teaching resources.  This approach has proven to be the most effective model used in teaching today.

Clifford the Big Dog Literacy Lesson Plans

Winter Theme Activities

This is a Science lesson plan related to the “Winter Theme”.  I will be introducing the concept of hibernation.  The video below captures the concept of hibernation effectively for young learners.  Click on the words “Hibernation Video” to view it.

A discussion will follow about what the students learned in the video.  After, students will complete the worksheet found in the link below.  The worksheet requires them to identify animals that hibernate and those that don’t.  They will cut and paste the pictures accordingly.  The worksheet will also be used to further the discussion.
